NGC2936
Description
This image shows the two galaxies interacting. NGC 2936, once a standard spiral galaxy, and NGC 2937, a smaller elliptical, bear a striking resemblance to a penguin guarding its egg. Also know as ARP142, this image is a combination of visible and infrared light, created from data gathered by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 3 (WFC3).
This image was created from 3 images of different wavelengths from the Hubble WFC3 Camera taken in June 2012.
The FITS data was mapped to the 3 visual channels (F657 to Red, F606 to Green and F475 to Blue) to maximise the detail inside this amazing object.
Image produced from raw data downloaded from MAST: the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes
Original image by ESA/Hubble, alignment, integration and colour mapping by Arc Fortnight.
